500. INTRODUCTION TO OUR POINT OF VIEW ON THE PRESENT CULTURAL STAGE OF EARTHLY EVOLUTION.
You being part of a Social Structure such as that of Earth, distorted by multiple deformations, distressed by hallucinating prospects of a Nuclear War, perplexed and disoriented amid the tangled web of Philosophical, Religious and Political-economic ideologies, dramatically searching with outstretched arms through the mists of a thick fog for spiritual and Physical PEACE and HAPPINESS without ever finding it.
And bearing in mind that you, Professor Sesma Manzano, belong to that select minority which turns towards spiritual factors, sensing with fine sensitivity that only in them will man attain his genuine freedom:
It was logical that you should ask this transcendent question:
IF WE MEN OF UMMO HAVE REACHED A SCIENTIFIC PHASE IN WHICH THE FACTORS SOUL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL ORGANISM ARE EMPIRICALLY ACCESSIBLE TO US:
HAVE WE FOUND THE EFFECTIVE MEANS OF QUENCHING THOSE STATES OF ANXIETY, REACHING THE SUPREME PATH TO FIND OURSELVES ON OUR ROAD TOWARDS WOA (GOD)?
But transcendent questions demand complex and laborious answers. We wish to speak to you with complete impartiality and scientific objectivity, striving to use expressions accessible to you. We apologize in advance if in the course of our exposition we have to turn to marginal accounts or insert various clarifications.
500. FICTIONAL STORY.
The Earth is passing through the dark years of the Middle Ages. In a lonely spot a Spaceship on a research mission lands. The crew come from an imaginary planet (let us call it DELTA) where scientific development has reached a level similar to the one you are living in 1966.
Soon the cultured travellers make contact with monastic Friars, true watchdogs of culture, astrologers, alchemists and doctors (or Physicians -as they were then called-) and other “sages” of the time.
At once the great secret is revealed to them: Certain ailments (whose aetiology they do not know: Neuralgias, Arthritis, ovaritis, disorders of the great Sympathetic) can be cured by means of a mysterious treatment called DIATHERMY by ULTRASHORT WAVES. And they try to explain the physical bases of so marvellous a system.
The assertion of the existence of Electromagnetic Fields is truly astonishing. The medieval sages look at one another, half amused and half suspicious. What proofs do the fair-haired strangers, who perhaps come from the wild lands of Germania, offer?
They are presented with the mathematical bases of Field Theory. Using the language of 20th-Century Earth, they speak of the Nabla Operator, of the Divergence of a vector, of Potential gradients, of magnetic Flux; they try to make Stokes' Theorem and Maxwell's Hypotheses comprehensible.
Strange symbols which the visitors translate as INTEGRAL of, Curl of, Differential of,...
Impossible to digest in a few months the whole Basis of Integral and Tensor Calculus. And with what training could one try to solve a system of Differential Equations?
Nevertheless they propose a new solution: All that cumbersome set of numbers and cabbalistic signs may be a mere fiction, as ingenious as it is unreal, invented to take advantage of the good Faith of the scholars of the Middle Ages:
If the foreigners are not impostors: might it not be possible to build that ingenious “machine” under their direction?
They have spoken of a High Frequency Generating Oscillator: they have shown some strange “paintings” in which one can see a board studded with strange “handles” and some cables linking it to some mysterious discs.
Soon they set to work: It is necessary to manufacture some devices called PENTODE VALVES; but where to find a rare metal called Wolfram? And that other one called THORIUM which will make it possible to build their cathodes? And the NICKEL needed for the grids?
Where is the glassmaker with broad craft experience who can make a glass bulb and then subject it to a high vacuum? But first: What is a vacuum? And how to speed up throughout Europe an industry capable of manufacturing the thousands of elements that go into that Contraption: Resistors, capacitors, coils, transformers...? And the energy to set it going, they say it is electricity? That mysterious fluid that makes sparks leap from a great ball of sulphur rubbed with a cloth? Obtain 220 volts? What do they mean by that enigmatic word: VOLTS?
The doctors continue exchanging knowing glances. What sort of buffoons are these who try to know more than Medicine, Astrology and Alchemy...? They say they have come down from heaven. Where is the chariot of fire that carried them and the angels that guided them?
The Astronauts anxiously present the papers laden with cabbalistic signs, their reports on the life of their Planet, where devices heavier than air fly, machines replace thousands of expert calculators and the moving images of human beings appear on screens.
We want proof!: cry the doctors hieratically; If you claim to possess those so-called DIATHERMY Apparatuses: There you have an anvil, a little stove, a saw, a hatchet. Build it with these pieces of wood and copper.
Peasants, artisans, soldiery, The common people as a whole watch the dispute with amusement. Someone asks, and they tell him:
Some bewitched and mad strangers who claim to have come down by hanging from one of those lights fixed on the heavenly ceiling!!! Let us burn them and have some fun!!!
Now merry jesters and minstrels spring up, claiming with a doctoral grimace to come from the Sun and the Moon. Nobody pays any attention any more to the Pilgrims of Space...

The moral of this Fiction is undoubtedly easy to understand. Nevertheless, those people who intelligently accept our presence, and perhaps that of other galactic inhabitants, may feel tempted to criticize openly the medieval doctors of our story. A vague resentment may arise, not without sarcasm. A contemptuous reaction against monks, “sages” and common people who did not know how to see in those men the heralds of the Future, the Spokesmen of a more advanced Philosophy and Science.
This last judgement, however, lacks all scientific objectivity. Indeed: It is in accordance with the most elementary laws of Social Psychology that the fabulous travellers of our story should come up against collective scepticism. And WE AFFIRM:
SUCH A HOSTILE REACTION IS NOT ONLY ENTIRELY EXPLICABLE BUT JUSTIFIABLE AND NECESSARY within the STAGE that EARTHLY HUMANITY was going through at that moment.
What is absurd, what is risky, what could have brought serious disturbances in the evolutionary process of Civilization, is to assimilate in an accelerated way techniques, Principles and scientific bases not in tune with the incipient Culture of the Era.
We are speaking in statistical terms, so that a statement referring to a whole set of OEMII (SOCIAL GROUP) may not be valid for a single person or a small group. That is: If in our previous fable a few people of advanced intelligence had discreetly accepted the astronauts' version, they could not be accused either of upsetting the psychobiological laws that regulate human evolution. But if these same people tried to force their social environment, coercing it in the name of scientific truth to accept prematurely so advanced a cultural heritage, they would make the same mistake as if, in the name of Science, you were to put a container of nitroglycerine into the hands of a child.
You are not right, then, when you accuse the respective generations of GALILEO, DARWIN or TEILHARD DE CHARDIN among many others, or in our case of DEEO 8 son of DEEO 9 and IE 456 daughter of NA 312, of not having understood their advanced ideas, rejecting them and even anathematizing them. The social group, by acting thus, was unconsciously defending itself against the traumatizing risk to its evolution involved in assimilating techniques or ideas which, on the arrow of TIME, should have been located at a more advanced point.
Although in coming reports we shall clarify these principles, we can give you an example lived by you of the risks involved in the rapid assimilation of a culture and its disastrous consequences: Japan can offer you elements for study and meditation.
These preliminary clarifications to the subject we are trying to develop for you in this REPORT should also help you understand in part the caution we exercise in communicating with Earthly Humanity.
Our scientific objectivity and our purity of intention prevent us from taking offence at the justified scepticism with which the masses and scientists themselves oppose the reality of our existence among you. We know, moreover, that a prudent revelation to some of you is harmless.
Let those people who accept our reality not be distressed, then, nor accuse their neighbours contemptuously of narrow-mindedness if they observe reactions of indifference or mockery. For how can they consider themselves bearers of the truth if they cannot respectfully understand the intimate motives of their fellows?
You will understand that if we were interested in publicity and the dissemination of our ideas, we would have ample technical means of making ourselves known (In fact the high spheres of certain Governments already know of us).
And rest assured that if the inhabitants of another planet wished to harm you, do not think that they would use terrifying weapons like those described in your Science Fiction films; rather, it would be enough for them to reveal their own culture to you abruptly and with ample proof. The disturbing effect on present-day Earthly Humanity would be catastrophic.
500. THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH.
You know that the evolutionary process of Humanity bears a close parallel to the process of growth of the child until it reaches the adult period. This analogy is not merely accidental, to the point that many of the biogenetic laws governing the behaviour of the individual also shape the behaviour of social groups.
In the first stages of Humanity, those men who a few years earlier had ceased to be mere anthropoid animals when WOA (GOD or GENERATOR) infused into them the influence of a dimensionless being such as the BUUAWAA (SOUL), did not yet have a neurocortical structure as ordered and developed as the one you have nowadays.
Those individuals, like the infant a few months old, were beginning to discriminate between the recognition of their own BEING and the awareness of the ENVIRONMENT surrounding them. In the face of this cognitive split, two reactions automatically appear:
FEAR AND ANXIETY in the face of the unknown.
CURIOSITY AND INTERPRETATIVE EAGERNESS.
These two responses are not simultaneous, but develop consecutively by virtue of psychophysiological laws whose somatic root has been known on UMMO for a long time.
The first reaction, which led the first human inhabitants to flee from the fire caused by an electro-atmospheric discharge or to worship the Sun and the volcanoes, was purely affective. It developed on the emotional plane (We shall speak to you of this when we deal with Fear, pain, pleasure or displeasure. That is, of the emotions in short). The physiological origin of this sensation of anguish was simply caused by the imbalance or disequilibrium as the first perceptions were processed in their brains without there being, in the cortical memory zones, true networks of images to compare them with. (Do not forget that when we perceive, for example, a TREE through our visual sense, there automatically comes into the field of Consciousness the image preserved in memory of another tree, a synthesis of perceptions accumulated long before. The comparison of the two: REAL IMAGE and EVOKED IMAGE constitutes the basis of reasoning). But when the memory does not contain that whole complex network of stored images and concepts which constitutes the “substratum” of knowledge, a whole series of neuronal disturbances is produced, leading to the sensation of ANGUISH or FEAR.
The first step in understanding those unknown forces, those phenomena inexplicable to those primitive minds, and thus avoiding the terror they provoked, was to associate or compare them in the field of consciousness with the poor range of images stored in their memories. (Animals, men, known objects). And so they ascribe personal qualities to the Moon or the constellations and identify atmospheric or geological phenomena with their own selves. This was the consequence of a defence mechanism against perceptions that provoked such reactions of fear.
But slowly and over the centuries, knowledge upon knowledge accumulates in the memory, constituting the cultural heritage of Society, and at the same time the habits or conditioned reflexes, which at bottom are neuronal mechanisms representing that knowledge, pass genetically from parents to children, constituting what you call INSTINCTS.
Observe, then, that when a UUGEE (CHILD) is born nowadays, his cortical constitution is totally different from that of the first inhabitants of UMMO or of EARTH. In the deepest layers of his memory, BUUAWAMIESEE OA (SUBCONSCIOUS), there already exist a few items of knowledge which, having been common to hundreds of past generations, have become genetically fixed in the sex chromosomes of the parents and are transmitted with the rest of the inheritance. He has also inherited, as you know, the conditioned reflexes which in turn constitute responses to as many items of knowledge (For example, in response to the knowledge or perception of the mother's breast, the conditioned reflex of sucking).
The men of our generations, then, do not find themselves, as their ancestors did, with a memory (CONSCIOUS or SUBCONSCIOUS) bare or devoid of images to set against or compare with the first perceptions received. The anguish towards the unknown gradually diminishes and is progressively replaced by CURIOSITY, the SEARCH for TRUTH.
But that process, which you are at present living in its ascending period and we in its descending one (The graph takes the following form: See drawing) (No. 1).
is in turn a function of multiple factors. It does not depend only on the neuroencephalic structure, although of course if your cerebral cortices were deficiently ordered, or disturbed by pathogenic agents, vitiated by anti-biological practices or disturbed by genetic mutations, there is no doubt that such evolution would be painful and aberrant.
We believe (And because we are in the middle of studying it we still refrain from giving you a categorical answer) that earthly society is damaged not in its primary constituent elements, that is, individual brains, but in the structure of its AYUYISAA (SOCIAL NETWORK).
Our specialists in Psychosociology on UMMO regard the human group as a particular case of AYUBAA (NETWORK). If there is a mathematician, electrical engineer or physicist among you, he will explain to you that a NETWORK is a mathematical abstraction, represented (SEE DRAWING No. 2) by a set of Points or “NODES” which carry an associated “POTENTIAL”, joined to one another by one or several lines, branches or “ARCS” to which a FLOW or INTENSITY is ascribed in an oriented way. A common example among you of a NETWORK or GRAPH is the circuit of a Television receiver, or a more intelligible one, the water mains of a city, in which the branches would be materialized by pipes through which flows or discharges of so many litres per hour circulate, and the nodes by the corresponding joints, whose associated potential is none other than the water pressure at that point. (DRAWINGS 3 and 4).
On UMMO we have created a whole science or Theory called AYUBAAEWAA. Mathematicians will understand us if we point out that it is equivalent to what you call SET THEORY. Only AYUBAAEWA studies the behaviour of SETS INTERRELATED WITH ONE ANOTHER. (What are for you the modern Network Theory and Set theory are mere sections of that generalized study).
A society behaves like a NETWORK, which can therefore be represented graphically (DRAWING 5), in which individuals are represented by NODES and the various types of relations that link them (RELATIONS of KINSHIP, of MENTAL SUBORDINATION, of VERBAL or TELEPATHIC COMMUNICATION, etc.) by ARCS. In this so complex mathematical model of a Network, needless to say, the elementary concepts of Potential and Flow have been replaced by an extensive range of psychometric and sociometric parameters.
Well then: We tell you in advance, until the time comes to analyse the problem carefully, that the great failure of SOCIETY on the PLANET EARTH lies in the defective structure of social communications. Put in a way understandable to people not versed in Sociology: The EARTHLY SOCIAL NETWORK suffers the consequences of badly focused spiritual relations among its members. Of a true poverty in its means of social communication, which prevents its members from understanding and identifying with one another. It is the external Environment that makes you unhappy, not your own brain structure.
